Zebra Mussel Outreach and Education Project

Objectives/Abstract:

  1. To have at least 5,000 boaters, anglers, lake shore property owners, decision makers, and other surface water users become aware of the impacts of zebra mussel introductions To have at least 100 of those implement techniques to reduce the risk of infestation.
  2. To have the standardized adult, juvenile, and veliger zebra mussel monitoring protocols developed within the region in accordance with national standards implemented by at least 12 additional monitoring groups in both New Hampshire and Maine.
  3. To augment baseline information of freshwater monitoring programs in New Hampshire and Maine in order to better predict infestation potential and monitor infestation progress.
  4. To provide utilities, agencies, and industries with updated information on viable treatment and control alternatives, as well as on economic impacts based upon experiences of utilities and industries already dealing with zebra mussels.

Methodology: Public education and monitoring through a series of workshops, training sessions, exhibits, newsletters, posters, publications and informal meetings.
