Vermont Zebra Mussel Education & Outreach Program

Objectives/Abstract:
Maintain and expand the public education and outreach program on zebra mussels in Vermont and cooperate in regional outreach efforts. Function as a statewide clearing house of current zebra mussel related information. Coordinate and expand two "subprograms": the Zebra Mussel Citizen Action Program, a volunteer-based spread prevention program; and the Zebra Mussel Watchers Program, a volunteer-based, statewide monitoring program. Determine the vulnerability of individual Vermont water bodies to zebra mussel infestation. Assist schools and teachers with incorporating education about non-indigenous aquatic species into their curricula. Assist facility managers with obtaining information on monitoring and controls.

Methodology: Utilize publications and other resources available nationally. Foster a regional network of individuals, organizations, and other agencies involved in zebra mussel education and/or research including the Sea Grant Programs. Conduct mailings, public service announcements, and press interviews. Conduct zebra mussel educational presentations to school and civic groups. Post and maintain effective boater advisory signs at public boat accesses on all of Vermont's water bodies. Form partnerships with key organizations (i.e., Federation of Lake Associations, Vermont Bass Federations) to aid in the recruitment and training of Zebra Mussel Citizen Action Program facilitators and task forces.
