Subprogram Coordination and Outreach to Reduce or Control the Spread of Zebra Mussels Dreissena polymorpha for Surface Water-Using Industries and Commercial Inland Navigation

Objectives/Abstract:
To regionalize efforts to educate and inform surface water users along southern waterways about the threat that zebra mussels pose to operations and, indirectly, to the general welfare, the need for monitoring, and the possibilities of prevention, mitigation, and control, while educating and informing commercial navigation firms of the same threat, and to coordinate efforts to study and assist all of the targeted southern interest groups associated with zebra mussel issues in the Program.

Methodology: After the development of a database of surface water using industries from the three states (Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana) and the establishment of the Program's coordinating unit, the outreach program will begin. Educational materials will be disseminated by general and monitoring workshops, newsletters, information cards, and brochures to both the surface water using industries and the commercial navigation industry. Coordination will be enhanced by the maintenance of the regional coordinating unit at Louisiana State University to receive, analyze, and disseminate the results of industrial monitoring and academic research.
