Florida Zebra Mussel Awareness and Prevention Program

Objectives/Abstract:
The overall objective of this project is to create an awareness and knowledge base in Florida and the Southeast Region that maximizes the effort to take action that will retard, and if possible prevent, the infestation of Southern waters by the zebra mussel.

Methodology:

  1. A statewide advisory committee will be established among environmental interest groups, regulatory agencies, relevant industries, academic interests and key experts knowledgeable about zebra mussels and other potential problem exotic mollusk species.
  2. Publications that have been collected will be modified and updated to meet the needs of Florida and the Southeast.
  3. Materials will be distributed through the Florida Boaters and Anglers Pledge Program and the Lake Watch Program.
  4. The Florida Lake Watch Program will include a zebra mussel element to their monitoring program.
  5. Other organizations will be solicited to begin zebra mussel alert programs.
  6. Florida DOT will be approached to explore alternatives for monitor and education programs at Agriculture Inspection Stations and Welcome Centers.
  7. Workshops (10) will be held at logistically appropriate locations around the state of Florida.
