Zebra Mussel Outreach

Objectives/Abstract:
Public outreach and education targeting the users (particularly children and their parents) of water bodies in Massachusetts that are vulnerable to infestation by zebra mussels in order to delay infestation and limit negative impacts once infestation occurs. Monitoring of research into the natural history and spread of zebra mussels. Maintenance and enhancement of MIT's library of information on zebra mussels as they pertain to Massachusetts.

Methodology:
Develop curricula and activities and events centering on zebra mussels and other exotic species for use in a pilot summer camp project. Relying on the expertise and materials developed through the Great Lakes and Virginia Sea Grant networks, contact user groups to alert them to the threat of zebra mussel and other exotics' infestation, suggesting proactive and reactive steps. Recruit the Massachusetts' Metropolitan District Commission, the Division of Fisheries, Wildlife and Environmental Law Enforcement, the Massachusetts Sportsmen's Council, and other fishing, boating and outdoor recreation organizations and agencies to distribute information to users. Coordinate efforts with other Sea Grant programs in the Northeast.
