Zebra Mussel Mania Traveling Trunk

Objectives/Abstract:
The Zebra Mussel Mania Traveling Trunk Education Project is designed to introduce young people to the problems caused by the spread of zebra mussels in our nation's waterways and to problems caused by other nonindigenous species. The goal is to encourage youth to feel a responsibility for their environment and to empower them to take the necessary steps to preserve it. This educational resource introduces students to the fun of science and acquaints them with real scientific methods, while enhancing educational skills in other subject areas. The curriculum and related resources materials provide an understanding of the biology and impacts of zebra mussels and other aquatic nuisance species. The project has received praise from educators and students and has been recognized as an outstanding project earning national and regional awards.

Methodology:
Ten hands-on activities, including experiments, games, and stories, are provided in a framework that includes science process skills, learning objectives, key concepts, and benchmarks for learning. Clear instructions are provided for teachers to use the materials and apparatus found in this Traveling Trunk. An accompanying teacher resource portfolio provides background reading and several video programs to familiarize educators with this subject. A Network of 32 lending centers across the nation and in Canada make this resource easily accessible to educators (a brochure provides locations of these lending centers). Zebra Mussel Mania can be borrowed or purchased by contacting the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Program at the University of Illinois and Purdue University.
