S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the various Sea Grant Institutes have developed a zebra mussel training initiative which concentrates on developing and implementing zebra mussel outreach and technology transfer support programming for state Cooperative Extension Services (CES) and other agencies in non-Sea Grant states. Gunderson, University of Minnesota Provide trainings and educational materials for the aquaculture, bait, and aquarium industries concerning chemical control and other strategies designed to minimize the risk of accidental introduction of zebra mussels or other exotic species via transport of ornamental fish, baitfish, and fish for stocking; to use and market the use of the portable, unmanned zebra mussel display units to reach identified audiences at boat and sport shows, conventions, regional aquaculture conferences, and county and state fairs with appropriate information about zebra mussels and other exotic species of concern; to continue the efficient transfer of the results of Minnesota Sea Grant Extension's "Exotic Species and Freshwater Boating Survey" conducted in 1994 to task forces, management agencies, and CES/Sea Grant programs so that the most cost effective boater education programs or incentives can be developed to effectuate appropriate behavior changes in the identified audiences.
